So what makes a good pantomime? Given that there are a set number of stories, the variation between one panto and another must come down to just two factors:

The first is the educational and motivational input that the company puts into the tale. Does it give the children something other than a theatrical experience?

And second (and this is something not often mentioned), we must consider the quality of the actors.

The name of the “West End in Schools” company reveals something about this final point – because all our actors are those who have recently been involved in productions in London’s West End theatres.

And our answer to the first point – is this educational and motivational – the answer is most certainly yes. The simple fact that we bring West End actors into schools says something very powerful to all members of the school: teachers, children, parents and governors.

This year we’re off to the mystical world of Old Peking and its most famous reckless ragamuffin Aladdin.

Which means there’s a high-speed ride on a flying carpet, powered by the magic of children joining in, making the actions and singing along. The children are at the centre of making the Genie’s magic, helping Aladdin make sure that everyone lives Happily Ever After – Oh Yes They Do!

You will find more details on our website at www.westendinschools.org.uk/shows

To book the Aladdin pantomime or to ask any questions about our work and our productions, please either:

The book contains details of the requirements of the course, followed by a large number of projects which will build knowledge, understanding and skills.

The projects require students to look critically at other artists’ and designers’ work and then show evidence of a clear line of visual enquiry in art work. All projects cover the areas of exploring and developing ideas, investigating and making, reviewing, adapting and researching into the work of others, and making critical analyses of the work they review. Hand drawn illustrations are included.

The projects in Art and Design at Key Stage Three are divided into section by year group which are intended to be given as handouts to students. For example Year 7 covers Texture and Mark-making, Colour theory, Portraits, Mixed Media, and Ancient Egypt. There is also a comprehensive selection of extra lessons.

It is available as a copiable book (also available on CD Rom so that it can be loaded onto the school’s learning platform).

There are two issues relating to tablets and laptops in schools at the moment. One is that the rate of growth in the number of tablets and laptops in schools is actually increasing. I can’t say the increase is exponential – but it is certainly growing fast.

The other is that the number of tablets and laptops that are being temporarily “lost” is growing too, and that is worrying.

This is not to say that the “lost” machines are removed with criminal intent. In fact, it is only a tiny minority of machines that are actually stolen.

What happens is that a person in the school legitimately takes a tablet or laptop to use, but then subsequently this specific tablet/laptop is hard to locate.

To help with this most schools mark all their portable IT equipment.

There is a problem though. Tablets and laptops are invariably made of either aluminium or hard plastic with a cured paint to make it hard and scratchproof. This makes putting identification marks on the equipment difficult, because you simply can’t ‘etch’ anything into aluminium or hard plastics as they do not have a porous surface.

One way out of this dilemma is to use (Dantech’s) aluminium trakaplates which, because of the thickness and strong adhesive that they use, are near impossible to remove. In fact, the only way you could get such an identification label off a machine would be to lever it off with a screwdriver – which is extremely hard to do. There are more details on these on our website.

An alternative approach is ID Silver Mark labels. These labels are precision cut stencils which can include your school name. The labels are then painted with UV ink to show up should the label be removed. There’s more information on these on our website.

If you have tablets or similar objects of value in the school and you would like a way to identify them as school property, please do see our website for our complete range of solutions.

Teaching rhythm, melody and harmony at key stage 3 is not always the most enjoyable thing of my timetable, except for the times when it really works and it is clear that the vast majority of the class have understood where I am taking the lessons.

What actually made my work a lot easier was the arrival of a photocopiable volume with a music CD with the exact title that suited my lessons: Teaching rhythm, melody and harmony.

This 130 page volume presents rhythm, harmony and melody as separate sets of activities which can be incorporated into lessons of any length. Each lesson plan sets out the purpose of that lesson, the materials needed, the method employed and the tasks to be done.

Activities are supported by specially composed short practice segments covering a range of styles, for example rock, reggae, jazz and funk.

Each activity and its accompanying music includes easier and more advanced elements for classes with a range of abilities.

The CD illustrates the text and provides accompanying music for student tasks with at least one CD track for each lesson. Students are guided through scores and lines of music, encouraged to get a feel for the flow of the piece and to sing or play at every opportunity.

Sample pages of the book may be obtained by emailing the publisher

Publisher’s catalogue number T1614emn

Format of the book: Ringbinder plus CD: £34.95 plus £3.95 delivery

It sometimes comes as a bit of a shock to realise that there are some 90 different spelling and phonic rules in the English language.

They range from troublesome similarities (such as words like “coin” and “toy” with the same sound but different spelling choices), to the six different ways of pronouncing “ough”, not to mention the bizarre collection of words which utilise silent letters.

There is only one way in which dyslexic students can learn the spelling choices for the many different phonics and homophones, and that is through a structured reading and spelling programme.

Which is exactly what MSL has devised: the complete reading and spelling rescue programme.

This programme covers all the 90 different spelling and sound rules and adds in ten sections on issues such as word patterns, suffixes, prefixes, homophones and irregular final syllables, making 100 topics in all.

The 90 rules and associated topics can be seen on our website where you can see the structured order of teaching that we have introduced.

What we have then done is broken these 100 topics down into 20 modules, presented in an order which allows students to use the spelling rules as soon as they have learned them.

As a result of this structured approach, which includes placement & progress tests, you can introduce a dyslexic pupil or student to the sequence from the very start. You can also begin work at a point where the individual will be revising key points, before moving on to areas of weakness, where his/her knowledge becomes erratic.

A copiable version of each module costs £29.99, or you can order five modules together on a CD for £80 plus VAT. All 20 modules are available for £450.

You can order the Reading and Spelling Rescue Programme in any of these ways:

On our website (where you can also see full details of the programme)

By phone on 01604 505000

Professor Irvine Gersch & Dr Anna Lipscomb

Children/young people need time, space and kindness to speak openly about the things most important to them and listening can help facilitators understand better the root of children’s thinking and behaviour, and can give an insight into how to better support them to reach their potential. Use these cards to provide prompts for a meaningful, stimulating and positive conversation about the ‘bigger picture’ in life. They will help children and young people understand their views about life, school and people important to them, which is enlightening for the facilitators too.

There are four areas for discussion:

•Identity – allows the child to consider what is special about them as individuals & includes: How would you describe the person you are?

•Important people – children are encouraged to consider who is important to them through questions such as: Who is special to you?

•Meaning & Purpose – questions covering our mission and purpose in life, for example: Do you think that people’s lives are set out for them?

•Thinking & Planning – the final set of questions allows individuals to think about how they reflect and make big decisions, for instance: How do you calm your mind, relax and think best? Have you ever experienced a big change in your life?

Contents: 17 A5-size cards, includes instruction booklet with ideas for use
